Congratulations! You’ve decided to buy a flashlight but what do you look for in a flashlight? Here are 14 tips when shopping for one.

1) Go for Reliable Name Brands – Try not to get the generic no-name flashlight. Get those which are well-known for their reputation of quality. Note! Different brands are for different purposes. Having said, that, go for one within your budget and which suit your purpose.

2) Brighter Isn’t Always Better - It the light is too bright, it might:

• Cause a glare on your reading materials
• Wake your sleeping partner
• Be difficult to adjust your eyes back to the dark

3) Do Not Compare Flashlight Brightness Just By Lumens - A good benchmark would be the brand Maglite. Take note of:

• How much the light is concentrated into one spot; OR
• How much light is broadly diffused
• How far the light is thrown
• The circle of light’s qualityRemember, a flashlight that is great for close-up tasks may not be effective for checking the surrounding of your house at night. So, determine your purpose of buying a flashlight.

4) Lighting Needs - Super-bright beams are for finding your way down a narrow path. Ambient lights are for relaxing campsites. There are many questions to ask but these are some of the main ones:

• How water-proof do you need your flashlight to be?
• Are you taking your flashlight to sub-freezing temperatures?
• Do you need to carry spare batteries?
• Are you car-camping, or backpacking?
• What priority do you place on light weight and packability?

5) Consider the Cost of Batteries - This is very important if you use a flashlight a lot. Consider how many batteries your desired flashlight uses. In the long run, a more efficient flashlight may be less expensive than a cheaper flashlight, once the cost of batteries is taken into account. A better alternative is that if you are a frequent user, choose the rechargeable battery. It will save quite a bit of money.

6) Consider the Availability of Batteries - For maximum flexibility, choose a flashlight that uses either alkaline batteries only, or more than one type. Why? Alkaline batteries are available just about everywhere in the world and can be stored for approximately 6 years.

7) Climate - If you’re staying in a country which has cold weather almost all year long, lithium-ion batteries are a good choice although they cost more. If you do buy a flashlight that uses only lithium-ion batteries, experts advise buying those batteries in bulk since they can be stored for about 10 years.

8) Efficient - This means receiving more brightness or runtime per watt. For example, Cree XR-E and Luxeon LEDs are more efficient than Nichia 5mm LEDs.

9) Best Reflectors - This differs. Smooth reflectors tend to concentrate the light in the centre. Choosing the best reflector would depend on whether you want maximum brightness in the center or a smoother gradation to the edge of the circle of light.

10) Durability - Powder coating is the least durable while aluminum bodies are harder. However, bodies with the most durable finish cost more. As such, experts vouch that price is usually a good clue to durability.

11) Warranty - Usually, the warranty period can give an indication of how reliable your flashlight will be.

12) Light Colour - Determine whether or not the whiteness of the light is important to you. E.g. Xenon bulbs produce the whitest incandescent light.

13) Assembly of Flashlight - Bi-Pin bulbs and complete lamp assemblies are the best incandescent format. Take note that Bi-Pin bulbs are tiny, making it easy to carry a spare but if the flashlight drops, these bulbs come loose easily. However, complete lamp assemblies don’t loosen but they’re pricey.

14) Replacement - Check whether the manufacturer/ shop where you bought from offers replacement services. If yes, check whether they have the replacement parts available.

Generally, a good flashlight needs good quality battery and good power capacity. Before you buy, check whether the battery switches are operating properly and always take the trial test before purchasing the flashlight.
